“Paskong Pinoy”

As the song goes … “Ang totoong paskong pinoy ay hindi puti, ang totoong paskong pinoy ay kayumanggi…”

Hello fellow Rotarians, its just like last week when I assembled and disassembled my Christmas tree, the next thing I know I’m assembling it again. Time really runs fast and we are again celebrating the best season of the year: “Christmas”. As Filipinos how do we celebrate Christmas?

There was these 10 years of my life wherein I was celebrating my Christmas alone. Though it was lonely but being a Filipino really makes a difference: the culture. Christmas for us is the time where families bond together; relatives abroad are coming home to celebrate the season.

It can never be denied that “lechon” is the best food Filipinos have during Christmas. Oh, we shouldn’t forget the “Simbang Gabi” or our lolo’s and lola’s will not give us presents. The variety of delicacies lined up outside the church ranging from “Palitaw”, “biko”, “bibingka” and many more.

The never ending party and exchanging gifts, elementary and high school reunions, family reunions to name a few. The children’s voices carolling at night with an ending lines: “Maayong pasko…” and “Thank you… Thank you…” and of course the famous “bersing bersing” line of the song “Joy to the world…” The “Judas belt”, “super lolo”, “bawang”, “kwitis” and “triangles” that gave lights and sounds during Christmas nights. Ninong’s and ninang’s are busy preparing gifts for their “inaanak” (I wonder how many are mine). These are just some of the best thing that “paskong pinoy” has to offer.

Being a Rotarian doesn’t limit us from these wonderful things. We Rotarians may not be aware with the fact that we are celebrating Christmas in our hearts everyday. The projects that we have, the smile that we put in every child’s faces, the food that we provide, the clothes, the medical missions, and the service to our community. For me, this is Christmas in my heart everyday.

“Paskong pinoy” is about giving, loving and sharing. The Rotary is just the same as “Paskong Pinoy”. I have a happy heart; I have a Christmas heart. I am a Rotarian, I’m proud and celebrating it.

“Philippines: Automated Election in 2010”

My questions are: Is the Country ready? Are the citizens ready? Are we ready?

These are just few of the many questions I have in my mind when this move of our government started. Personally, I am in favor of this undertaking. I am in favor not just because I am an IT professional; I am in favor because I want change. Change in the system, change in the culture; change in the way Filipinos chose their leaders, and change for my country. I voted ones, I have witnessed how unsystematic our electoral process, I have witnessed how hard for my fellow Filipinos to cast their votes. It took a lot of days to count the votes; it took a lot of weeks to declare who wins.

I can say, we filipinos never learn. We are all hounded by these nightmares for decades or even centuries and yet we never learn. A lot of us still question the credibility, assurance, reliability and integrity of this plan. My question to those who are uncertain: When are we going to do this?

The thing is we will never know the answers of our questions until we do it. There are no perfect things in this world. Yes there are possibilities of failure, but do we really need to live with this notion? It’s just a matter of believing that WE Filipinos can do it. Personally, the percentage of success in automation is small; this applies to any automation I have encountered as an IT professional. We can never know the solution until we encounter the problem. But if we really want change, we only have to believe that we can do it.

If they (other countries) can do it, why can’t we? The hardest part is only at the beginning. We might encounter problems next year, but I’m sure we can solve everything the next more years. I still have little confidence in our government. I believe that we Filipinos can do this. Let’s just believe and commit to the CHANGE we long dreamed of having. Let’s do this.

"Success… What, Where, When and Who… but HOW?"

Life as we all know has its own way of telling us that it has all the reasons one needs to be happy. When can we say we are happy? And when can we say we had lived our life to the fullest? You, me or them has their own way or story in answering the question. One thing for sure that in every stories we had, in every experiences and undertakings we took into our lives, we sure had lived a life.

Success has always been a word so smooth and relieving to hear, even more the word that everybody craves to have. Success comes in many ways and styles; it’s not just all about the money or wealth, achievements and honors doesn’t even paint the whole picture. Success is equated to the word blessed. When we succeed in everything that we do, we always thought that we are blessed.

What if we stumble, what if we fall? Isn’t it a blessing also? In our lives it is not always success. As other says, you need to experience failure (stumble and fall) to learn. Success doesn’t come in golden plate, but for some yes, it comes in a golden plate.

Let me share this success story of Bill Gates written by Ravi Kumar Paluri published way back 2004.

“Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 in a family having rich business, political and community service background. His great-grandfather was a state legislator and a mayor, his grandfather was vice president of national bank and his father was a lawyer.

Bill strongly believes in hard work. He believes that if you are intelligent and know how to apply your intelligence, you can achieve anything. From childhood Bill was ambitious, intelligent and competitive. These qualities helped him to attain top position in the profession he chose. In school, he had an excellent record in mathematics and science. Still he was getting very bored in school and his parents knew it, so they always tried to feed him with more information to keep him busy. Bill’s parents came to know their son's intelligence and decided to enrol him in a private school, known for its intense academic environment. It was a very important decision in Bill Gate's life where he was first introduced to a computer. Bill Gates and his friends were very much interested in computer and formed "Programmers Group" in late 1968. Being in this group, they found a new way to apply their computer skill in university of Washington. In the next year, they got their first opportunity in Information Sciences Inc. in which they were selected as programmers. ISI (Information Sciences Inc.) agreed to give them royalties whenever it made money from any of the group’s program. As a result of the business deal signed with Information Sciences Inc., the group also became a legal business.

Bill Gates and his close friend Allen started new company of their own, Traf-O-Data. They developed a small computer to measure traffic flow. From this project they earned around $20,000. The era of Traf-O-Data came to an end when Gates left the college. In 1973, he left home for Harvard University. He didn’t know what to do, so he enrolled his name for pre-law. He took the standard freshman courses with the exception of signing up for one of Harvard's toughest mathematics courses. He did well over there, but he couldn’t find it interesting too. He spent many long nights in front of the school's computer and the next day asleep in class. After leaving school, he almost lost himself from the world of computers. Gates and his friend Paul Allen remained in close contact even though they were away from school. They would often discuss new ideas for future projects and the possibility of starting a business one fine day. At the end of Bill's first year, Allen came close to him so that they could follow some of their ideas. That summer they got job in Honeywell. Allen kept on pushing Bill for opening a new software company.

Within a year, Bill Gates dropped out from Harvard. Then he formed Microsoft. Microsoft's vision is "A computer on every desk and Microsoft software on every computer". Bill is a visionary person and works very hard to achieve his vision. His belief in high intelligence and hard work has put him where he is today. He does not believe in mere luck or God’s grace, but just hard work and competitiveness. Bill’s Microsoft is good competition for other software companies and he will continue to stomp out the competition until he dies. He likes to play the game of Risk and the game of world domination. His beliefs are so powerful, which have helped him increase his wealth and his monopoly in the industry.

Bill Gates is not a greedy person. In fact, he is quite giving person when it comes to computers, internet and any kind of funding. Some years back, he visited Chicago's Einstein Elementary School and announced grants benefiting Chicago's schools and museums where he donated a total of $110,000, a bunch of computers, and provided internet connectivity to number of schools. Secondly, Bill Gates donated 38 million dollars for the building of a computer institute at Stanford University. Gates plans to give away 95% of all his earnings when he is old and gray”.

At present, Bill gates donated Millions of Dollars to the Rotary Foundation to help eradicate polio worldwide. He is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Seattle.

“In pursuit of the life we dream…”

Is there a way we could alter destiny just to achieve the life we ever wanted? What are the ways or little ways that we could say or feel that in some ways by doing it or by having it, we did or almost had the life we dream?

In pursuit of the life we dream, we took this journey hoping to achieve successful living. The focus should be on what is exactly that we want and then setting ourselves on course for going and getting it. It is very important to know what we want in our life and how we pursue in getting it.

There is another aspect of achieving the life you dreamed of. It seems to be actually counter-productive to getting the life you want, yet it is imperative to a successful life. It is giving.

Giving of yourself, your time, your money, your energy is something that takes us from simply being successful people in a traditional sense and to being people who lead successful lives.

Giving is what makes us fully human. It is the essence of what we are, people who are here on earth together, not simply people who hope to clamor to the top of the pile in the survival of the fittest. Yes, pursue your life and your success with wild abandon; be responsible for yourself and take ownership of your life, realizing that you cannot be responsible for others, but also allow yourself to become a giving person.

Giving is also what allows us to accomplish things far beyond ourselves; and that is part of what living the life of our dreams is all about, right? Accomplishing great things through ourselves – and others!

“The door of opportunity…”

All throughout my life I always hear this line: “The door of opportunity only open ones”… I wonder what it means, I wonder why there is a door and I wonder why there is only one.

I want to share these words from Chris Widener, a motivational speaker and an author, “Those who succeed are those who walk through the door of opportunity when it swings open. That we know. But what is the secret to getting through the door of opportunity?”

Being outside the door when it swings open.

As the story goes, Frank Sinatra got his big break while working as a waiter. One day, as he was waiting tables, who does he see sitting in the restaurant, but one of the biggest names in the music industry? Old Blue Eyes did the unbelievable: He cleared off a table next to the gentleman and got up on it and sang! He knew he was done at the restaurant for doing so, but how many times would this door of opportunity open up? Needless to say, the rest is history.

You see, you never know when the door of opportunity is going to open wide. For some, the big break comes early in life and for others later on. But for all of those who become successful, there is one key similarity: They were ready. And for every one of those who were ready, there were thousands more who weren’t.

So, the principle for us is: Be ready!

Are you ready? Here are some thoughts for you to consider.

Are your skills as sharp as they could be? Are they enough so when your shot comes you can perform?

Is your character deep enough to handle success? Let’s face it; you don’t want big success if your character won’t be able to handle it.

Are you working hard to position yourself now? The job to do while waiting for the door to open is to develop your skills and your character, so as to position yourself to get through that door before it closes.
Your door will open someday. It opens for everyone. It may only open once or it may open many times. It is different for everyone and life just isn’t fair that way. But everybody gets a shot. Will you be ready?

“The road less travelled…”

As we travel our life’s journey, we oftentimes encounter challenges. There is no easy way in this travel, but most of us usually take the road most travelled. A road well constructed, runs under many acacia trees that protects passers-by from heat of the sun. There are lots of fancy restaurants on its sides, lots of beautiful scenes as you travel along. Even sometimes there is a cart ready to serve you so that you may not enervate your feet through the course of the journey. Wow, how I wish my life’s journey was on this road.

There are always two roads in life and you can never travel them both at the same time. We need to choose between these roads. Ones you start your journey, there is no looking back. There is no rewind or reply. There’s no redo and undo. There is no “save as” and no restore point. There is no adobe Photoshop in our life’s journey.

I have travelled my life for almost 29 years already and I chose the road less travelled. On that road, I learn how to be humble, how to share, how to be contented of what is has to offer. I have learnt to get something out of those almost nothing. I hardly see trees that shade me from the heat of the sun. I never had a chance to ride a cart to keep my feet from getting weary. I have to write my goals in flat surfaces perhaps on stones, I never had a chance to use inks in drawing out my plans.

I tried to take a pause and compare both roads; I then realize that whatever road you have chosen, whatever road you have taken, in the end, everybody gets tired and in the next morning, everybody gets to see the sunrise. After all, this is the reason why we are here; to live the life HE has given us. It is up to us which road we take. The road most travelled? Or the road less travelled?

“Accidental vocation…”

Accidental: Occurring unexpectedly, unintentionally, or by chance.
Vocation: a special urge to a particular calling or career.

I put the definition on top for a reason: To fully understand my subtitle for this week’s issue. An Accidental Vocation, I chose these words to describe how and why I am working in an academe.

“I was never born to become a teacher…” this was my line since I stepped out from college. I always wanted to work in the IT industry but never in an academe. I never have the guts or patience in teaching. I always wanted to finish my work ahead of time; I never dwell in a situation for so long. I always want quality in my projects. I was never an excellent student; I was never an achiever in college. I do cheat; I do copy from my classmates during exams.

But in 2004 I started teaching. At first I always get confused every time students are having a hard time understanding our lessons, I always get disappointed every time students got low scores in my exams. I tried to ask myself, was it me? Or is it them?

I never realize I was walking alone on my own path, believing that I am having same students as my classmates in college. I was trying to set some standards which I thought they could reach, I was trying to push them, forgetting that they need help instead of a standard.

As time pass by, I loosened up. Instead of pushing students to the limit, I tried to become someone who’s willing to teach and accommodate. I became a friend and a listener to my students. I tried to experiment different techniques in teaching, making my approach performance-oriented, result-oriented instead of a classroom oriented. I tried to listen more to them instead of me talking more in them. I allow them to open up and communicate; I established an interactive classroom environment. What I discover best was, relating “technical specifications” to “real-life situations”, translating “complex discussions” to “simple, fun-related interactions”, Transforming “intricate lines-of-codes” to “straightforward lines-of-real-life-thoughts”. Things are already so knotty in IT, so why make things complicated?

Three years after, I started to see some success stories; my students are slowly getting recognition locally, recognized for their exemplary performance in their field of study.

My students are slowly getting recognition nationally, showing advance knowledge in their chosen field.

I have done my part, now it’s their turn. This is my accidental vocation: Teaching and transforming lives, I was never born to be a teacher, but I am one.

I never lived my life to the fullest, but I touch lives. Rotarians teach and touch lives. I think I am.

“I am smiling because…”

Eight hours… Eight long hours… that’s how long I’ve seated in the sofa watching the burial of my beloved, our beloved… President Corazon Aquino. A Filipina by blood, a mother to her son and daughters, an icon to many, and the mother of Philippine democracy. I was just three years old then when her husband senator Ninoy was shot and died. I was only six then when the people power revolution erupted.

You maybe asking me this, what was your idea then? I can’t answer you if you want to hear my thoughts of her being the nations president, I can’t answer you if you want to hear how she fought the dictator. I can’t answer you if you want to hear how she put the pieces to together and built a country again. But one thing for sure, I can answer you if you want to hear, in my own thoughts, who is Cory.

I never thought of her as our then President. I never thought of her as the David who beat goliath many years ago. I never thought of her as the wife of a slain senator. I thought of her as a mother, a servant, an example, and an inspiration.

It takes something in oneself to become someone. It takes mountains to reach a paradise; it takes a country to bring a democracy. It takes a whole world for Cory to set us free.

I’m maybe young then, but after all I am thankful for what she did (according to many), I am thankful and grateful for her courage to stand and fight. I admire her for serving our country; I was overwhelmed with her for being responsible, strong and dedicated. Her unselfishness. Her passion to serve. She changes many Filipinos lives. “Bayan muna bago pamilya bago sarili…” I wonder how she managed to do all of this.

A question popped out from my mind, was she a Rotarian? I can see the “service above self” in her. Just like her, Rotarians care more with their community, they gave hope to the hopeless, and they gave food to the hungry and water to the thirsty. Rotarians fight for good health, Rotarians fight for better education, they put smiles in everyone’s face, and they touch, change lives and Rotarians make a difference.

I am smiling because I am a Filipino and I’m proud of it. I am smiling because I belong to the rotary and I find joy in it.

My Processor's Point of View

My processors point of view: “I thought I can’t, but I did…”

Good Day! Fellow Rotarians; Today marks the first club meeting of the second month of rotary year 2009. One month had past and no one among us had notice how fast time passes by. It’s still fresh in my mind the induction of officers last June 20, the next thing I know it’s already august.

If we are going to look back on what had happen after one month, our club had already conducted three (3) outreach programs, Four (4) regular club meetings, one (1) fellowship and 1 assembly.

Wow! This is the only word that I can speak at this very moment. Just for one month we were able to touch many lives, we were able to put smiles on someone else’s faces. Rotarians can really make a difference.

I am only 8 months old here in rotary but my heart is already filled with overwhelming joy. In rotary, I see kindness, passion and dedication. “Service above self” Every sweat, every cent, every peso, every shot of the camera: a smile in a child’s face: PRICELESS.

Another month, another projects, another set of meetings, fellowships and assemblies, or I should say, another set of challenges. Challenges that can change lives, touch hearts, and at the end of the day, make us happy.
“If you want to receive, focus on giving. Give more of yourself to others, love more and be kind. Care about the success of others and help them. By doing this you open yourself up to receive all that you desire to be happy.” – Random acts of Kindness…

By Chance and By Choice

When we meet the right person to love,
when we're at the right place at the right time,
that's chance.

When you meet someone you're attracted to,
that's not a choice. That's chance.

Being caught up in a moment (and there are a lot
of couples who get together because of this)
is not a choice. That's also a chance.

The difference is what will happen afterward.
When will you take that infatuation, that crush,
that mind-blowing attraction to the next level?
That's when all sanity goes back, you sit down and
contemplate whether you want to make this into a
concrete relationship or just a fling.

If you decide to love a person, even with his
faults, that's not a chance. That's choice.

When you choose to be with a person, no
matter what, that's choice.

Even if you know there are many people out
there who are more attractive, smarter, and richer
than your mate, and yet, you decide to love your
mate just the same, that's choice.

Infatuation, crushes, and attraction come to
us by chance. But true love that lasts is truly a
choice. A choice that we make.

Regarding soulmates, there's a beautiful movie
quote that I believe is so true about this:
"Fate brings you together, but it's still up to you to
make it happen."

I believe that soulmates do exist, that there is
truly someone made for you. But it's still up to you
to make the choice if you're going to do something
about it or not.

We may meet our soulmates by chance, but
loving and staying with our soulmate is still a
choice we have to make.

We came to the world not by finding someone
perfect to love, BUT to learn how to love an
imperfect person perfectly...

Be Happy

Simple Rules to be happy: free your heart from hatred, free your mind from worries, live simply, give more, expect less...

-
Forgive and Forget. Don't allow yourself to be overcome by anger, sorrow, wrath, or life. When you release others and let them go, you release yourself to live life to the fullest as well. Accept people's apologies, even when they are not packaged exactly the way you hoped. Move on. Forgive yourself too. Nobody is perfect, we all make mistakes. Friendship: VCH Barkadahan 1996

Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget.

A moment lasts all of a second, but the memory lives on forever.

Even though we've changed and we're all finding our own place in the world, we all know that when the tears fall or the smile spreads across our face, we'll come to each other because no matter where this crazy world takes us, nothing will ever change so much to the point where we're not all still friends.

The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart. ~ Elisabeth Foley

Something Crazy but Fun...

It's been a while, yes it is. I usually post clips from the web here, but for now, i'm thinking of writing my own entry... uhmm let me try.

Girl (You know who you are... I'm Sorry)

I just can't believe it
You were always on my mind
I hope I can I forget it
And I wish that I was blind

But now that you’re with someone
I can't believe it’s true
It's really hurting me
When I see you...

[Chorus]
Girl, even though you love somebody
I'm still here to love you
Girl, I can't hide this feeling
That I feel for you... ohhh......
That I feel for you...

I can't accept the fact
That you’re with him right now
There's nothing I can do...

And now that you’re with someone
I can't believe it’s true
It's really hurting me
